Welcome to My Blog
Hi, I’m Kent. I’m a writer, college professor, and guitarist. I created this blog for people just like you—artists and writers who are looking for resources, tips, and practical inspiration to fulfill their creative calling.
Michelangelo once said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” I’m here to help you chip away the excess and give you wings to fly with creative freedom.
I write a couple of articles per week, usually focusing on some aspect of writing or the creative process. Creativity is a broad subject and it touches every aspect of our lives. That’s why you’ll find posts related to writing, productivity, attitude, relationships, movies and the arts, and much more.
To make sure you don’t miss any posts, sign up for my newsletter. When you do, I’ll also send you my free book 21 Time Hacks for Writers.

My Story
I grew up in the small town of Potosi, Missouri and was active in theater, band, and vocal groups in high school. Although my major in college was preaching ministry, my real interest was always the arts. I spent several years in college traveling with a music team and leading worship.
After college, my wife Melanie and I moved to northern Illinois, where I was a worship pastor for a number of years. During this time I completed a Master of Divinity as well as a Master of Arts in Worship Studies from Lincoln Christian University. (My Master’s thesis was on the topic of worship leadership in the Bible, and you can download it here. I’d recommend loading up on caffeine since it’s not what you would call light reading …)
In 2004 we moved to Missouri when I was invited to join the faculty of St. Louis Christian College, where I still teach today. I teach courses in arts, technology, guitar, film, theology, and worship leading. I also direct our online program.
In addition to teaching, I also work with creatives through coaching and other services. You can find out more about working with me on this page.
I’m the author of two books: The Artist’s Suitcase: 26 Essentials for the Creative Journey and 30 Days of Evernote for Churches. My hobbies include reading, writing, playing guitar (a Taylor 414ce), watching movies, and hanging out with my family.
Melanie and I have been married for 20 years and have an awesome son named Ben. We also have a neurotic cat named Sandy and an emotionally needs Australian shepherd named Madison. We live just outside St. Louis.
Some of my favorite things:
Favorite authors: Robert Greene, Seth Godin, Henri Nouwen, Joanna Penn, Stephen King, Steven Pressfield, Donald Miller
Favorite movies: The Dark Knight, Citizen Kane, Back to the Future trilogy, Chinatown, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark
Favorite musicians: The Beatles, John Mayer, Miles Davis, Journey, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Curtis Chapman, U2
